Spoon Full of Sugar

I bet as soon as you read that line you recalled the tune in your head from Mary Poppins singing it in the movie.  It came to me as soon as I saw the picture on the internet – how ingrained has our viewing become to what sticks in our heads.  I was only 2 years old when that movie was first released but I remember watching it many times.

The reason I think the line of the song came to me right away is because during the past week I have had to take a lot of ‘medication’ for different ailments and would I have said ‘a spoon full of sugar helps’ it go down – probably not if I am honest!

When we are experiencing pain and discomfort it is easy to reach for a quick fix but in reality, we need to allow the healing process to take its course and work with it.  In these times of pulling back and hiding what we are dealing with, it is easy in a way to cover up and not let others in… I saw a clip on my social media this morning that describes this.

I was speaking with someone the other day who was emotionally bereft and although they confessed, they had still been out and ‘seen’ by others socially, it was not the real ‘meeting’ of hearts and fellowship that they really needed – it was more about just doing to get the job done.  Really, they were still very lonely and upset on the inside and very much like what was shared above.

Opening up and rubbing ‘medicine’ in on the inside spiritually would probably speed the process up a lot quicker but we also need to understand that every ‘ailment’ requires a different treatment plan. As I am discovering currently with my own body, having had major dentistry work so now have an achy jaw and on antibiotics. Trying to mask pain – any type of pain with pain killers is a topical remedy at best but there is still the deep healing underneath that requires time to process the progress of body parts to knit together in the physical and or heart, soul and mind to come back into alignment in the spiritual.

14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. – 1 John 5:14-15 NIV

I recall back in 2020 when I was forced, in a way to have foot surgery - see full chapter on ‘Shoes’ in my latest book ‘Fragrance

Towards the end of September 2020, I was surprised when a surgeon’s office rang me (whom I had previously, earlier that year discussed the possibility of having surgery with) to offer me an opening for surgery in 2 weeks’ time (8th October 2020) to have major work done on my left foot!  With COVID-19, all surgeries were halted earlier on and when they were reopened then the doctors were going full tilt to get as many done before a possible lock down happened again… hence why I said yes!  It was not what I really wanted at the time but needed to get in and deal with.

My rehabilitation was rather painful and arduous, due to three bolts secured on the inside of my foot and two major scars later, but I knew it had to be done and now we are in a New Year I have to re-adjust my capabilities and work towards getting stronger and improve on what has to be done… wear ‘cute’ shoes!

excerpt from book ‘Fragrance’ by Kim Stanfield

What really stood out to me back then was the intensity of dealing with your body trying to heal and your only given strong medication for a finite amount of time.  When that time is up your left with having to deal with it – bit like the metaphone ‘where the rubber hits the road’.  I remember asking the surgeon at one appointment if I could have more tablets and he said ‘nope’ – take Panadol!

Obviously, the Doctor had done many of these surgeries and knew how long a person needed to take certain medication and when they could then stand on their own two feet to get better and move on…. But you as the individual who has never done this or dealt with it before is overcome with the whole ‘catastrophe’ going on, inside and out, it’s a very different story!

Getting back to the idea of us ‘covering up’ our attitudes and actions with just a ‘spoon full of sugar’ or sweetener for others to see us dressed up in on the outside I think is a no brainer.  It doesn’t work or can’t help!  So how do we ask the Lord to show us how to be real and vulnerable with others so we can get the help we need and fix the issues that are clearly there?

It’s very clear that we need to take each step in FAITH that our Heavenly Father will guide and direct us through his word (reading our bible every day) for confirmation.

for we walk by faith, not by sight [living our lives in a manner consistent with our confident belief in God’s promises]— 2 Cor 5:7 AMP

I have to keep a vigilant check on myself every day, that I am not getting off track somehow and to do that I talk to the Lord and ask Him to show me.  I must admit that due to my health issues this past week I was not able to enjoy my regular coffee’s so that for a start put me in a precarious emotional state (according to my husband) each morning – meaning I was not the most pleasant first thing, but I believe the Lord would understand me for that.

23 For if anyone only listens to the word [a]without obeying it, he is like a man who looks very carefully at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he immediately forgets [b]what he looked like. 25 But he who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and faithfully abides by it, not having become a [careless] listener who forgets but [c]an active doer [who obeys], he will be blessed and favoured by God in what he does [in his life of obedience]. – James 1:23-25 AMP

So doing our everyday regularly stopping to check with Jesus on how to make adjustments due to our circumstances is our best type of GPS for the journey.  If we had the ability of Mary Poppins to snap our fingers to make everything work out perfect I think we would be kidding ourselves – as much as that seems marvellous… I pray that God would bless and guide you, along with adding star shaped sprinkles to your day!
