3 key factors of being 'watchmen on the wall'

Isaiah 62:6 AMP - On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed and stationed watchmen (prophets), Who will never keep silent day or night; You who profess the Lord, take no rest for yourselves,

Ezekial 33:7 AMP - I have made you a watchman…

The phrase "watchmen on the wall" is a biblical and spiritual metaphor (rooted heavily in scriptures (see above) that describes a specific call to spiritual leadership, protection, and intercession.

Here are the 3 key factors of being a watchman on the wall:

1. Alertness and Constant Vigilance

A watchman cannot afford to fall asleep or be distracted. Spiritually, this means maintaining a state of continuous awareness and prayer.

* Continuous intercession: Isaiah 62:6 states that watchmen "will never be silent day or night." It requires a commitment to consistent prayer.

* Discerning the times: Watchmen must stay spiritually awake to spot subtle shifts, cultural dangers, or moral decay before they impact their community or family.

2. Early Detection of Danger

The primary job of a watchman on a city wall is to see what others cannot see from the ground level.

* Elevated perspective: By staying close to God through scripture and worship, a watchman gains a higher perspective, allowing them to see spiritual threats or enemy tactics from afar.

* Identifying the enemy: They distinguish between a friend and an enemy, ensuring that deceptive influences do not slip into the "city" (the church, the family, or the culture) unnoticed.

3. Faithful Warning (The Sounding of the Alarm)

Seeing danger is useless if the watchman stays quiet. Ezekiel 33 highlights that if a watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, they are held accountable.

* Speaking truth with courage: A watchman must sound the alarm—whether through preaching, correcting, or prophetic warning—even when the message is unpopular.

* Clear communication: The warning must be distinct and clear so that the people know exactly how to prepare, repent, or defend themselves.

I believe that this season is paramount for us to ‘all’ keep a vigil (vigil is a period of purposeful wakefulness, quiet waiting, or devotional observation, usually kept during hours when people normally sleep) watch on what is happening round about us and for our brothers and sisters.

As the word of God says in Luke 21:28: "When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near."

Let us then all be ready…

“But be on your guard. Don’t let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap, for it’s going to come on everyone, everywhere, at once. So, whatever you do, don’t fall asleep at the wheel. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that’s coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man.” – Luke 21:34-36 MSG

Prayer: Lord, I pray that I would have the strength of the women from 1292 in Zurich, that you would steady my stand for you to be strong in adversity and continue having your patience, love and grace for all those around me in this season – Amen!
